Review of The Four Winds by Kirsten Hannah

Texas, 1934. Millions of people are out of work and with a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their lands and livelihoods as all of the crops are failing, herds are dying, water is drying up and the dust is threatening to bury them all. One of the darkest periods in American History of the Great Depression, during the dust bowl era and it has arrived with a vengeance.

In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli, like all of her neighbor's, must make the agonizing choice: to fight for the land that she loves or to go west to California in search of a better life. This novel is a indelible portrait of America and the quintessential American Dream as seen through the eyes of the powerful women whose courage and sacrifice which will come to define the generation.

I didn't know what to expect going into this novel but I did know that was going to enjoy it as I love Kristin Hannah and her writing style. I love the way that she builds the characters and their environments in a dynamic fashion which helps and enhances the story being told.  There were times in this were i found myself laughing out loud and others i could not read the pages due to the tears which were streaming from my eyes. This was one of those stories which is endearing and crushing at the same time and Kirsten Hannah is one of the few authors who is able to make me feel every possible emotion from angers to love.

I love the way that Elsa and her families story is told which shows the determination and sacrifice which people during this time period had to endure. Kirsten Hannah makes this sound at times like a fairy tale and in others an epic journey which are both at opposite sides of the scale when writing. How does she do it? This is not an easy story to read and at times i thought that i would have to put it down, however i would highly recommend this to any one who loves historical fiction.

Review of To Kill A Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

Princess Lira is a Siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in the her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a cruel twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter,  the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one things that they loathe the most - a human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian's heart to the Sea Queen or remain a human forever.

The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even through he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobby and he calls it his calling and something he was born to do in live. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she is more than what she appears to be at first. She promises him that she will be able to find a key to destroy all of sirenkind for goods - however can he really trust her? Just how many deals will the prince have to barter to be able to eliminate mankind's greatest enemy?

I have found that this was a very Dark fantasy for the young adult genre and it has the way to tell its compelling and vicious story without using the standard troupes linked to the genre. We find that the leading characters are the most unlikely companions who are linked with a hatred of the Sea Queen. However by the end of the story their stories as entwined in each other however as you can guess there is always going to be a twist when fate comes between them. This is the romance story that i love which is very slow burning and I love the way that this builds to the point that Lira is willing to give up everything that she believes in to be wut the man that she loves. I also love that this is a very imaginable retelling f the Little Mermaid and lets us see the reason the Sea Queen became as twisted as she has done. I would recommend this to any reader who loves a retelling of the classic Disney tales.

Review of When I Was Ten by Fiona Cummins

She had lived a lie for the last thirteen years, and this has been the outcome for the perfect life as she has known is about to change forever.

Everyone remembered Sara and Shannon Carter, the little blond haired sisters. Their Dad was the local GP and they lived in a very beautiful house on the hill, and their best friend Brinley Booth lived next door. They would do anything for each other but everything shifted on that fateful day when Dr Richard Carter and his wife Pamela were both stabbed 14 times with a pair of scissors in what the most talked about double murder of the modern age.

The girls were aged ten and twelve at the time that this murder happened. One of them quickly becomes known as the Angel of Death and spends 8 years in the children's secure unit accused of the brutal murders. The other one lived in foster care out of the limelight and all of the prying questions. Now the anniversary of the trial, a team of investigators have made a documentary and has tracked down one of the sisters and persuaded her to speak of the events that happened on the fateful night for the first time in 13 years. The explosive interview sparks a light in the national headlines and Brinley Booth, now a journalist herself, is tasked with covering the story which starts to bring fresh evidence and triggers a course of events which will have devastating consequences for all of the people involved.

Well, unless you know Fiona Cummins writing then you do not know what you are in for and boy did i not know what i was in for. I found myself drawn in and my heart thumped for the full length of the book and not knowing where the story was going to go. I read this book in 36 hours and i am glad that i read this in 2 sittings helping me to maintain the pace of the writing style. I did not think that Fiona Cummins held back and used hard hitting language to bring the story home. I also felt that I was a fly on the wall and was in the room when the events were happening. I definitely could not see the twist and turns that this novel was going to go however when reading she gave little snippets and clues on the outcome of this story. This is definitely a book for the lovers of thrillers.

Review of Everything is Beautiful by Eleanor Ray

Sometimes it's impossible to part with the things which remind us of the loves that we have felt the most...

When Amy Ashton's world came crashing down eleven years ago, she started collecting. To start with it was just a little collecting of the keepsakes of happier times - sometimes some honeysuckle to remind herself of the boy she loved, a chipped china bird, old terracotta pots. However things that others might consider throwing away, Amy feels the need to keep them as they to her represent a life that she would have had.

Now the house is overflowing from all of the collecting that she has done and it is getting to the point that her obsession could mean that the house runs out of space ... even for herself. When a new family moves in next door, a chance discovery unearths something which has been long buried and Amy's carefully constructed life starts to fall apart. If she is able to find the courage to face the painful things from her past, might the future she though she had lost all of those years ago be for her to grasp in both hands ?

I absolutely loved this story and all of the descriptive chapters helped to bring the story to live for me. On several occasions i found myself shutting my eyes and i could see Amy in her cluttered house and feel the items start to push in on you making you feel claustrophobic. I loved that i didn't really know until the last couple of chapters that Amy was going to find love, but i was hoping in all my heart that she would find a loving man. I can not wait to see what comes from this author in her next book.

Review of Cats Don't Chase Dogs by Kara Kings

In today's world of online dating, social media, texting and ghosting - navigating through the treacherous world of dating and relationships has become more confusing that it has ever been. Kara King's controversial dating advice book discusses how women can use the wisdom of the feline to live an amazing life as a women, while also simultaneously being the type of women who captivates men. And all of the while maneuvering through dating and relationships with ease. In this book you will discover some of the following:

  • How to stop being a doormat
  • How to start thinking like a goddess
  • How to present yourself in a way men beg for commitment
  • How feminine influence helps change the world for better

Learning all of these lessons and more by embracing the wisdom of the feline and applying this wisdom to your life as a women. Kara King's dating advice will empower women around the world by dramatically empowering their lives and relationships by changing the way they think.

I love the way that Kara King puts this subject matter into a realistic way that everyone can visualise however it did take me a bit to get my head around the terminology that she used. I tell you if i had had this book 20+ years ago when i started dating then i think i would have had a different relationship with my ex-husband - however it is because of the mens behaviours in this that i am no longer with him. I think this is something that all women .... and some men ... need to read at some point in their lifes as the advise is sound. I would recommend this to everyone as this is a self-help book for all.

Review of Sorry It's A Girl by A. A. Khan

Lahore, 2018. In a city which is teaming with gossip and rumors, where the spoken word is as sharp as a the whip. Five individual women led extraordinary lives.

Born into wealth and opulence, Maya and Arzoo are the best of friends, achieving everything that is expected of them. From achieving top grades to entrance to the exclusive Ivy League schools. This allows them to glide through Lahore's glittering scenes with effortless and being entitled to the opulent life. Meanwhile the charming Laila is married to a business tycoon and is living in the life of luxury which others can only dream of. But is life rarely this perfect....

In this world where image is absolutely everything and traditions will always prevail, these women will struggle to negotiate through friendships, family and society's expectation. Beneath all of the designer clothes lie the hidden scars and secrets which none of them can tell. And through all of this love with bloom and triumph.

I was pulled into this story from page one and transported to a location that i knew nothing about and witness the issues which face women there. I love how this explored all five of the women and managed to entwin their stories together and show how everyone is link to another. I loved the overall writing style however i did find some of the descriptive aspects of the story very lengthy which meant that I found that my attention started to waive from the story. I think due to this what i was thinking when i went into the book was lost and was left a bit underwhelmed by the end especially as i had some high hopes for it.

Review of The One (Selection #3) by Keira Kass

The time has finally come to crown the winner and the new royal princess.

When she was chosen to compete in the Selection, America had no idea that she would have any chance of winning the hand of the handsome and dashing Prince Maxon. As the end of the competition comes closer she realizes how much she has fallen for the Prince and how the threats from outside the palace walls grow even more vicious. America find out how much she wants to win and how much she stands to lose if she does not fight for the outcome that she wants.

I actually preferred this one to the Elite, This had the angst love triangle aspects which was what I wanted from The One. At times i was so frustrated with America and her to and froing between the prince and the guard that i wished i could call her and give her a verbal shake. I did enjoy the overall build up to her finally telling Maxon that she loved him and that she finally stopped playing games with his heart. Even he was due to give up and pick someone else to be his bride. The first 50 pages did what the previous book did in 325 pages and thank goodness, thank god she made her decision and stuck to it in this book.

Review of Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

This is an atmospheric, gritty and compelling novel involving star-crossed lovers set in the circus world in 1932.

When Jacob Jankowski, who has recently been orphaned and is suddenly adrift, jumped onto a passing train little did he know that he had entered the world of freaks, drifters and misfits. The circus that he has stumbled into is a second-rate circus which is struggling to survive during the Great Depression, who is reduced to making one night stands in town after endless town. Jacob was a veterinary student who had almost earned his degree, being put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It is while doing this job he meets Marlena, the young and beautiful star of the equestrian act, who is married to August the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. He also has the fortune to meet Rosie, an elephant who seems to be un trainable until he finds a way to reach her and change the animal make-up.

This beautifully written, the novel is illuminated in the interesting way in which this has been written making use of the wonderful sense of time and place. It is the story of a love which sparks between two people who overcome the incredible odds which is hard to find in a world were love is a luxury that few can afford.

This novel is told by the same person at two different times in his life, at the age of 23 and at the age of 93. This is something that when done well is something that i love and Sara Gruen has managed this effortlessly. This story was at most points very homely however this was interjected with explicit content which should have a trigger warning as this may be things which the reader may find hard to digest. If you are affected by abuse, against both humans and animals then maybe this is not the book for you. I however was able to over look these distressing scenes as I was enjoying the rest of the novel and the method of story telling.  I love the way that the author has effortlessly flipped between the two timelines and how these were blurred together so that the reader can truly feel as if the 93 year old is telling his story and not just having someone tell you his life story on his behalf. This novel buys into the environment of the circus and she uses small little tricks to seamlessly change the direction of the narrative to hold the readers attention.

Review of The Elite (Selection Book #2) by Keira Kass

The Selection began with thirty-five girls, however the competition has been narrowed down to the six Elite. The competition has suddenly become more fierce than ever and the girls are starting to become more and more cut-throat with their tactics. And all though this America is still struggling to decide where her heart lives - does it lie with Maxon the dashing price or Aspen the guard who has been assigned to look after. she has a tough decision to make, does she go with Maxon who can make her fairy tale come true or does she go with the one thing which helped her during her childhood.

As the competition moves on the other girls know exactly what they want and all America wants is some more time to be able to make this decision. Time that she does not have the luxury of having.

This was the ideal sequel to the first book, it up the anti and developed the main characters from the first book. It also allowed you to find out more about the royal family and the dynamics which have led to all of the traditional which have been put in place. I find that this was the book which focused on the love triangle between the contestant, the prince and the guard and this is one of the troupes that i love and it had me from the beginning.

Review of The Selection (Book #1) by Keira Kass

For thirty- five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. It is the opportunity to escape the constricts of the class that they have been born into and the life which has been written for them since the day since they were born. This is their chance to be swept up into the world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels and to live in the palace and compete to win the heart of the Prince Maxon and become the next royal princess.

However for America Singer, being selected is the nightmare that she has been dreading. he will have to turn her back on her secret love with Aspen, who has been born into a caste below her and their love would be frowned upon. She has to face the fact that she will have to leave her home to enter a fierce competition for the crown and prize that she has no interest in winning. Living in the palace feels like a jail cell to her and she is living in a place which is under constant threat of being attacked by the violent rebel forces from both the north and south.

However, things start to change when America meets the dashing Prince Maxon and gradually she starts to question all of the plans which she had made for herself. She soon realizes that the life that she has always dreamed of for herself may not compare to the future that she started to imagine for herself.

This is the novel which is the result of the marriage between The Hunger Games and The Bachelor and have a family. I found this book a different type of book than I normally read, however I found myself engaged in the story from page one. This was one of the few books which I have read in one sitting and this was due to it having a pace which constantly had you guessing what was going to happen next. I can not wait to read the next books in the series to see what life has in store for America and Maxon. I found this utterly surprising as this is not the genre that I would normally pick up but found myself pleasantly surprised and fell in love with the whole cast of characters. I found that this was exactly the book I was looking for when Burial Rites left me with a book hangover. I would highly recommend this to everyone who is wanting to find an engaging story to use as a palette cleanser after a differcult read.

Review of Burial Rites by Hannah Kent

This is the brilliant literary debut which has been inspired by a true story - the story of the final days of a young women accused of murder in Iceland in 1829.

This novel is set in Iceland's stark and beautiful landscape, Hannah Kent brings to life the vivid story of Agnes who has been charged with the brutal murder of her former master and is sent to an isolated farm to await her execution. Horrified at the prospect of housing a convicted murderer, the family try at first to avoid Agnes. Only the priest Agnes has chosen, Toti has the access to the women who have chosen him to be her spiritual guardian seeks to try to understand the women and her story. As Agnes's execution date looms and edges closer, the farmers ' wife and the families ' daughters learn that there is another side to the sensational story and the gossip which they have heard.

This story is reverting and rich with the lyricism which is associated with Iceland, Burial Rites evokes the dramatic existence in the location and time that most of us can only imagine. It also tries to answer the burning questions of how can a woman hope to endure her life when it all depends on the stories which have been told by others.

OMG, I could not put this down, I have always loved historical fictions which is embedded in true stories of the past. This was a heart-rendering story which shows how gossip and story telling can twist a person's history until it has been distorted so far from the truth that you hardly know what the truth is any more. Let me say that this is not a FUN story to read and it left me in a book hangover which didn't leave me in a state where i could face another book for a couple of days until i had digested the book and all the feelings that it had left me with. I found the first 40% of the book hard to get into and once i had got past this point i had to read the rest of it in one sitting and i think this was due to (partly) to the immersive writing style and the building nature of the story. It was not hard to give this book a high 4 stars and this was something that i normally wouldn't read as i am a fantasy lover, however saying that i was glad that i took the jump and immersed myself into the story. I have not found a debut novel from an author which i have loved as much as this one. I would 100% recommend this to lovers of historical fiction based of true life stories.

Review of Aurora Burning by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Our heros are back ... kind of. From the bestselling co-authors of the Illuminae Files comes the second book in this epic series about a squad of misfits, losers, and discipline cases who just might be the galaxies best hope for survival.

Lets start with the bad news: an ancient evil - you know, your standard consume-all-life-in-the-galaxy deal and it is about to be unleased. Now onto the goods news - Squad 312 is standing by to save the day. They have just got to take care of a few small distractions first. Oh like a clan of gremps who'd like to rearrange their favorite faces. And also the cadre of illegit GIA agents with creepy flowers where their eyes used to be and will stop at nothing to get their hands of Auri.

Then of course, Kal's long lost sister, who's not exactly happy to see her baby brother and she has the Syldrathi army at her back. Basically with half the known galaxy on their tails, Squad 312 has never felt so wanted. when they learn that Hadfield has been found, it's time to come out of hiding. Two centuries ago, the colony ship all but vanished and it left Auri as it's sole survivor. Now the black box might be what saves them however time is short and if Auri can't learn to master her powers as a Trigger, the squad and all of their admirers are going to be deader than the Great Ultrasaur of Abraaxis IV. This installment of the sory has shocking revelations, bank heists, mysterious gift, inappropriate tight bodysuits and an epic firefight will determine the fate of the Aurora Legion's most unforgettable heroes.

This one had me guessing from page one and the twist in the tales made me sit up and question everything which i had read in the previous installment. It is amazing how a plot twist can turn the whole story up side down and makes me question if there is going to be another installment in this epic sci-fi fantasy. I can not wait to see what the author come up with next and will always recommend this to other readers.

Review of Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Acadmey are being assigned their first missions. Srat pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, however his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs who nobody else in the Acadmey wants.

He has the following in his team:

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her banknotes
A smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy's biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who's totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty's squad isn't even his biggest problem - that's be Auror Jie-Lin O'Malley, the girl he's just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for over two centuries, Auri is a girl who has been thrust out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, Tyler's squad fo losers, discipline-cases and misfits might be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

I love this pairing of authors, and i knew that this was going to be an instant hit for me. I always try to go into a book with a clear mind however this was a different story. I was grabbed from page one and i knew that i was not going to be able to put this down and i read it in 2 sittings. I found that this was the right amount of balance between sci-fi and adventure which kept me guessing what was going to happen next. It also helped that we have a buddy relationship which also pulls the story along, I can not wait to see what the next one does for the storyline.

Review of Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

Chain of Gold, a new Shadowhunters novel, is the first novel in the brand-new trilogy where evil is hiding in plain sight and love cuts deeper than any forged blade.

Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior who is trained since her childhood to battle demons. However when her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother will travel to London in the hopes of preventing their families ruin. Cordelia's mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride who would be stuck in her house under her husband's thumb. Soon Cordelia will encounter her childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn to the glittery world full of ballrooms, assignations, supernatural salons where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians. In all the time tat she is experiencing this she must hide the love which is building for James and this is made all the more important as he is sworn to marry someone else.

But Cordelia's new life is about to be blown apart when a shocking series of demon attacks devastate London and the whole of the UK. These monsters are nothing like those that the Shadowhunters have fought before and these demons can walk in daylight, strike down the unwary with incurable poison, and seem impossible to kill. London is immediately placed in a state of quarantine. This means that Cordelia and her friends are trapped in the city, and they discover their own connection to the dark legacy has gifted them with some incredible powers ... they are then forced with a brutal choice which will reveal the true and cruel price of being a hero.

This is one of the most engaging books which i have read in 2020, I love the characters and the new story arc which has been built for them. As always Clare is able to balance the struggles of the time with the angst of the love troupe in a way only she can. I am a sucker for the Victorian London and the comraderies which is always evident.

Review of The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

Henry "Monty" Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman however he was never one to be tamed by the expectations of society. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven't been able to curb any of his roguish passions. Couldn't curb his likes for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men.

However as Monty embarks on his Grand Tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family's estate when he returns, however Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and travelling companion, Percy. It is not in Monty's nature to give up easily and even with his sister, Felicity, in tow he vows to make this yearlong escapade his best adventure ever and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. However when one of Monty's decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt which spans across Europe and it calls everything he knows into question including his relationship with the boy he adores.

This book made my heart swell to 3 times it normal size and i thought that i was going to die from laughing. This was one of the best books which i have read this year and it is one of those love stories which shows that love is not constricted by the boundaries of gender. The characters are very well rounded and develop through the author's descriptive way of telling the story. I love the way that she has discussed and tackles some of the issues which we are tackling in every day society, i have recommended this to some of my friends and family and they have all loved this as well.

Review of Queen of Air and Darkness (The Dark Artifices #3) by Cassandra Clare

What if damnation is the price of true love?

Innocent blood has been spilled on the steps of the Council Hall, the sacred and famous stronghold of the Shadowhunters. In the wake of the tragic death of Livia Blackthorn, the Clave teeters on the brink of out and out civil war. One fragment of the Blackthorn family flees to the institute in Los Angeles, seeking to hopefully discover the source of the disease that is destroying the race of warlocks. Meanwhile, Julian and Emma start taking a desperate measure to try to put their forbidden love aside and undertake a perilous mission to Faerie to retrieve the Black Volume of the Dead. When they find in the Courts is a secret that may tear the Shadow World asunder and open a dark path into a future they could never imagined. They then find themselves caught in a race against time, they must save the world before the deadly power of the Parabatai curse destroys them and everyone that they love.

Everything I have read in the Shadowhunter universe has led up to this moment and i have not been disappointed with how this has turned out. I now have a new set of friends whom i have become invested in and can not wait to go one more adventure. This has been an adventure this year and I can not wait until we get the next installments of the world. This book follows immediately after the events which happened in Los Angeles, the fascists are still trying to control the Clave and intent on dictate how the Downworlders should be treated. With the warlocks hurting and disruption in the Faerie, many of our beloved characters are missing, however so many individuals are grieving the loss of loved ones. This book in my opinion that this book is a love letter turned in to a letter of grief and Clare does this is a way no other author can do it.

As the danger closes in, Julian starts to devise a risky scheme which depends on the cooperation of an unpredictable enemy. However his success may come with a price he and Emma cannot imagine, one which will bring with it a time of reckoning of blood which could have severe repercussions for everyone and everything they hold dear.

Every single book I read of Clare's the more in love I find myself with all of the characters and how the different families are all entwined. This was the sequel which i have been waiting for. It has the same amount of high-intensity and beautifully constructed content which we have all come to expect from The Shadowhunter Chronicles. With this installment we go further and deeper into the world than we have seen before. Following on from the repercussions from the cold peace, there is significant tensions between all races in the shadowhunter universe. This is accompanied with the fact that there are bombs set to detonate the relationships, every page builds on the tensions which are anticipated from the character arcs. This has given me everything which i wanted to happen in the story and more which i didn't know i wanted.

I love the multi prospective from the wide range of characters, which i feel that every character in this series gets their moment in the sun and it is a pleasure to see that we get to know more about this new collection of characters. I can not wait to see where these characters go from now one and how Clare takes this to the next level.

Review of The Shock of The Fall by Nathan Filer

What begins as the story of a lost boy slowly turns into a story of an individual who yearns to understand what happened on that fateful night and also to himself as well.

While he is on vacation with his family, he along with his brother snuck out in the middle of the night. On this fateful night only Matthew came home safely. Ten years later, Matthew opens up and tells us that he has found a way to bring his brother back ...

What begins as the story of a lost boy son turns into a story of a brave man yearning to understand what happened on that night, in the years since then and also to his own sense of self. Unafraid to look at the shadows of our hearts, Nathan Filer's rare and brilliant debut novel shows us the strength which is apparent in the characters resilience and love which he has for his family.

This was one of those books which broke me with it's honest and unbiased description of mental illness. It shows how no one is truly alone in suffering and how long individuals can hold on to a secret which can eat at them alive. I found that this story was not told in chronological order and I find that the way that this story is told is one of the reasons I love it s much. It is also very unusual to find this type of hard hitting story based in the UK, it also opened my eyes to some of the more stigmatized aspects of schizophrenia which sometimes get brushed over. I have recommended this book to some of my friends who have worked with mental health patients and i have had a mixture of feedback from them. I will always hold this in my high regards and will continue to promote this book to many of my friends.
